What is EXIF Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and other metadata used by digital cameras and smartphones. When you take a photo, your camera automatically embeds detailed information about the shot into the image file.

Common EXIF Fields Explained:

📷 ISO Sensitivity

Measures how sensitive the camera sensor is to light. ISO 100-200 (bright conditions), ISO 800-3200 (low light). Higher ISO creates more grain/noise.

🔆 Aperture (f-number)

Controls how much light enters the camera. Lower f-number (f/1.8) = wider opening, more light, blurred background. Higher f-number (f/16) = smaller opening, less light, sharper background.

⚡ Shutter Speed

How long the camera sensor is exposed to light. Fast speeds (1/1000s) freeze motion. Slow speeds (1/30s or slower) create motion blur. Very slow speeds require a tripod.

🔍 Focal Length

The distance between the lens and sensor, measured in millimeters. Shorter focal length (18mm) = wide angle view. Longer focal length (200mm) = zoomed/telephoto view.

⚖️ Exposure Mode

How the camera determines exposure settings. Auto = camera decides everything. Manual = photographer controls all settings. Aperture Priority/Shutter Priority = semi-automatic modes.

🌡️ White Balance

Adjusts colors to match the lighting conditions. Ensures whites look white under different light sources (daylight, fluorescent, tungsten, etc.).

🔒 Privacy Note:

EXIF data may contain sensitive information like GPS coordinates showing where the photo was taken. Many social media platforms automatically strip this data when you upload photos. Always be aware of what metadata your images contain before sharing them publicly.

💡 Why EXIF Matters:

  • Learning Photography: Study settings used in great photos to improve your own technique
  • Copyright Protection: Proves authorship and when/where a photo was taken
  • Photo Organization: Automatically sort and categorize photos by date, location, or camera
  • Quality Control: Identify which camera settings produce the best results

All processing is done locally in your browser. Your images and EXIF data are not uploaded to any server.
